Placenta Not Harmed by Covid-19 Vaccines, Study Finds

The argument that Covid-19 Vaccines will damage the placenta, the organ that provides oxygen and nutrients to a developing baby during pregnancy, has no biological basis. Dr. Richard Beigi sits in the Immunization, Infectious Disease, and Public Health Preparedness Expert Work Group of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Beigi said, “There’s no theoretical reason to believe these vaccines would be harmful. There’s never been any vaccine that’s been linked with infertility.” Despite this, misinformation continues to propagate, causing concerns and vaccine hesitancy among expectant mothers. Dr. Emily Miller, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology said, “We have reached a stage in vaccine distribution where we are seeing vaccine hesitancy, and this hesitancy is pronounced for pregnant people.”

Placenta Not Harmed by Covid-19 Vaccines, Study FindsMiller and her Northwestern University colleagues reported in a new study published Tuesday that Covid-19 Vaccines do not damage the placenta or have an adverse effect on pregnancy. Miller hopes to that her team can help reduce the concerns of the vaccine in people through the data and study. The research, which was published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology on Tuesday, was the first to look into the effect of Covid-19 Vaccines on the placenta, according to the authors.

The placenta is vital to the growth of a foetus because it provides oxygen to foetal tissues while the lungs develop and nutrition while the digestive tract develops as the first organ to form during pregnancy. In addition, at the end of pregnancy, the placenta releases needed hormones and passes on antibodies to protect the baby after birth.
